Bookwell is a font that is made for every occasion. When starting this project I knew I wanted to make something for body text. I landed on the classic expansion contrast forms we have all come to love. I put my spin on it by adding ink traps. Historically, ink traps were used to combat printing limitations and make the font print in the best way. The extra cut out in the letter is to compensate for the way ink functions at smaller point fonts. Nowadays, we do not need this to be designed into fonts. The printing methods and screens of today have improved so much that it almost makes ink trapping irrelevant. This is not the case though. Ink trap fonts are here to stay. This falls into many optical tricks type designers use to create consistency in coloring on a page for example. The way I used the ink traps was a more counter intuitive method. Since I wanted to create a font with some contrast, not all strokes are the same width. This creates many problems that you probably wouldn’t encounter when working on other fonts. To combat this, some aspects of the letter forms have been created backwards. For example, the “s” has two ink traps. The thins of the stroke fall right next to the serifs (where the ink trap cut out is to be), so I had to make the actual serifs nearly twice the size of the typical serif for Bookwell. This font evolved out a book weight to include a medium and bold. This will create more use cases, but I would be lying if I told you I didn’t make a bold weigh to have a cool display version of Bookwell.

This purchase comes with three weights of Bookwell (Book, Medium, and Bold) and an End User License Agreement for the Fusion Type foundry.
